Results of the 2013 HIMSS Security Survey show progress toward hardened security and use of analytics, but more work is needed to mitigate insider threat, such as inappropriate access of data by employees. Federal initiatives such as OCR audits, meaningful use (MU) and the HIPAA Omnibus Rule encourage healthcare organizations to increase the budgets and resources dedicated to securing patient health data. However, over the past year, 19 percent of respondents reported a security breach. Additionally, 12 percent of organizations have had at least one known case of medical identity theft reported by a patient.

Using an implantable monitoring device, the patient can hold a smartphone-type device to the chest and the device will relay info wirelessly from the heart implant to the doctors at the hospital. It allows doctors the ability to better personalize treatment for heart failure patients while giving those patients more control of their chronic condition.

Neovasc Inc. announced that a first-in-human implantation of its Tiara transcatheter mitral valve was successfully performed Jan. 30 by physicians at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. The transapical procedure resulted in the elimination of mitral regurgitation (MR) and significantly improved heart function in the patient, without the need for cardiac bypass support and with no procedural complications.

Claron Technology will debut at HIMSS 2014 enhancements for a streamlined image and video upload for both mobile devices and desktop PCs. This will add functionality to its family of Nil universal, zero-footprint viewers. The technology requires a browser only, not installation of an app or engine. The technology supports mobile devices and allows zero-footprint upload of both digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) and non-DICOM data from notebook and desktop computers.

HealthMed Holdings completed validation on a blood test that aims to identify individuals who are at risk of a heart attack and may be missed by conventional tests. These individuals have no symptoms and frequently have normal standard blood cholesterol profiles, but are at significant risk of having a heart attack in the near term. The group is actively commercializing the test.
