A large-scale, multicenter study has shown that therapeutic hypothermia does not improve survival rates or reduce brain injury in infants and children with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest more than normal temperature control.

September 19, 2014 — According to a new study, peritoneal hypothermia is feasible for patients who have suffered ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, the procedure was associated with an increased rate of adverse events without reducing infarct size. These findings were reported at the 26th annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium earlier this week.

Use of therapeutic hypothermia is used to prevent neurological damage in patients who suffer sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), and there are many advocates suggesting a similar approach can help improve outcomes in ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.
