June 4, 2024 — The countdown has begun ahead of the American Society of Echocardiography 35th Annual ASE Scientific Sessions, June 14-16, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, OR. This year’s program, “Global Echocardiography: Innovations in Diagnosis and Beyond,” is described as an educational experience gathering global experts and enthusiasts in echocardiography, hosted by the largest global organization for cardiovascular ultrasound imaging serving physicians, sonographers, nurses, and scientists. The Program Chair for ASE 2024 is Federico Asch, MD, FASE, MedStar Health and Georgetown University (Wash., DC) and Co-Chair is Eric Kruse, BS, ACS, RDCS, RVT, FASE, University of Chicago (Chicago, IL), with another 31 Program Committee members working to coordinate the Sessions.
According to program planners, the format this year has new pathways and favorites from past years. The goal, as detailed in a program guide welcome statement, is to provide an environment for engaged learning through case-based discussions and a few traditional lectures delivered by a diverse faculty including multiple disciplines and international representatives. In addition, the program has been designed to allow attendees to access a broad overview of topics, or delve deeply into one or two topics. In addition, particular care has been taken to incorporate ASE guidelines into talks to demonstrate how and why they should be applied in daily practice.
Highlights and New Features at ASE 2024 Scientific Sessions
• Joint sessions with 17 partnering multimodality organizations.
• The Keynote Gardin Lecture with Jagat Narula, MD, PhD, president-elect of the World Heart Federation.
• The opening Plenary Session featuring ASE President, Benjamin Eidem, MD, FASE, Mayo Clinic, presenting "The State of ASE," and recognition of the 2024 Award Winners, 3rd Leadership Academy, and 2023 FASE members.
• Stephen Little, MD, FASE, FRCPC, FACC, Houston Methodist, Immediate Past President, presenting the 35th Annual Edler Lecture.
• Sonographer Career Day on Saturday where sonographer students are encouraged to attend and learn for the day. Coordinators note that there are many sessions specifically designed for professional development, including two recruiting sessions for employers and professionals on the look may find a match.
• Six Science & Technology Theater presentations by industry in the Echo Expo.
• The 25th Feigenbaum Lecture, presented by Shaine Morris, MD, MPH, FASE, during the Arthur E. Weyman Young Investigator’s Award Competition.
• Five Read with Me sessions to learn directly from the experts.
• The Kerber Lecture, presented by ASE Past President, Linda Gillam, MD, MPH, FASE.
• The Brian Haluska Sonographer Research Competition on Sunday afternoon.
• Eleven Poster Sessions and three Rapid Fire Abstract Presentations.
The conference schedule was designed so participants can explore the latest advancements and share groundbreaking research, while engaging in stimulating educational discussions that will shape the future of cardiovascular imaging.

World Heart Federation President-Elect to Address Global Heart Disease
In its program overview, ASE also noted that Jagat Narula, MD, PhD, President-Elect of the World Heart Federation and Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at UTHealth Houston, will deliver the 6th Annual Gardin Lecture, “A Quest for Eliminating Heart Disease Globally: Lessons Learned from Noninvasive Imaging” on Friday, June 14. This lectureship was established in honor of ASE Past President and 1st Scientific Sessions Chair, Julius Gardin, MD, FASE. Dr. Gardin mentored numerous physicians and sonographers and this lecture series supports his passion for education by providing funding to bring a luminary speaker to the Scientific Sessions every year. ASE is a proud member of the World Heart Federation.
25th Annual Feigenbaum Lecturer to Address “Imaging as the Key to Congenital Cardiac Outcomes Research with Little and Big Data”
Shaine Morris, MD, MPH, FASE, will present the 25th Annual Feigenbaum Lecture titled, “Echocardiography and Deep Phenotyping: Imaging as the Key to Congenital Cardiac Outcomes Research with Little and Big Data.” Dr. Morris is a Pediatric Cardiologist and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Genetics and the Fetal Cardiology program at Texas Children’s (Houston, TX). She is also Associate Professor in Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Morris’ research focuses primarily on improving outcomes for children with Marfan syndrome and related disorders. This lecture was named in honor of the founder and first president of ASE, Harvey Feigenbaum, MD, FASE. This lectureship is awarded to a young investigator in recognition of their significant contributions to research in the field of echocardiography and their potential to continue at a high level of achievement.
Kerber Ethics/Humanitarian Lecturer to Focus on Health Equity
The ASE Foundation is proud to recognize Linda Gillam, MD, MPH, FASE, as the 2024 Richard E. Kerber Ethics/Humanitarian Lecturer. She is the Dorothy and Lloyd Huck Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line for Atlantic Health System, and Professor of Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University (Phil., PA). Dr. Gillam will present “Echocardiography and the Path to Health Equity” during the Limited Resources, Unlimited Wants session. This biannual lectureship was established in memory of ASE Past President Richard E. Kerber, MD, FASE. Dr. Richard Kerber championed issues of morality and ethics and how medicine fits into the broader world. To honor his legacy, this annual lectureship features an ethical dilemma or humanitarian patient care activity.
ASE Echo Expo to Spotlight Technology Innovations
The ASE 2024 Echo Expo will be held on Level 1 in Exhibit Halls A & B. According to exhibit coordinators, the exchange of information and access to new concepts, technology, devices, and research is a vital component of your professional development, offering an opportunity for attendees to meet face-to-face with the industry’s leading developers and executives who can help you discover what’s new and show you ways to reduce costs and improve productivity in a rapidly changing industry, including updates on the newest equipment and devices, as well as the latest in research and development. Organizers emphasized that the showcase of investigators from around the world presenting cutting-edge research on the latest advances in cardiovascular ultrasound is a highlight of ASE’s Scientific Sessions.
