August 8, 2023 — The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) presented two winners of the 17th Annual Canon Young Investigator Awards (YIA) in cardiovascular computed tomography at its Annual Scientific Meeting (SCCT2023), held July 27 – 30 in Boston, Mass.
SCCT awarded Gavin Huangfu, MD, of University of Western Australia as the YIA winner for his abstract, “CT Frailty Model Outperforms Clinical Frailty Score For Mortality Prediction Following TAVR.”
First runner-up is Alexander Te-Wei Shieh for his abstract, “Radiomics Analysis Of Sex-specific Differences In Pericoronary Adipose Tissue Extracted From Coronary Ct Angiography.”
“It’s an exciting time to review research from radiology residents and cardiology fellows in our field, especially as it continues to evolve and expand at such an exponential rate,” says co-chair of the YIA judging panel, Marcus Chen, MD.
“SCCT and Canon Medical Systems remain committed to supporting the research, writing and oral presentation skills of these future leaders. Dr. Huangfu’s presentation stood out to the judging panel because of its originality, execution and relevance to the cardiovascular CT community.”
Finalists include:
- Tsung Ying Tsai, MD – Feasibility And Accuracy Of Real-time 3d-holographic Graft Length Measurement, A Substudy Of The Fasttrack Cabg Trial
- Marcel Langenbach, MD – Association Between Small Particulate Matter And Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease In Patients With Stable Chest Pain Across The U.S.: Insights From The PROMISE Trial
- Venkat Sanjay Manubolu, MD, MPH – Association Of Thoracic Aortic Calcification And Coronary Heart Disease Events: Multi-ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
The five finalists gave an oral presentation of their manuscripts before an independent panel of judges – led by co-chairs Chen and Rene Packard, MD, PhD – on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29 at the Canon Education Theater. Winners were announced at the Team Spirit session on Saturday, July 29.
The YIA program supports the professional and clinical development of top radiology residents and cardiology fellows within five years of completing a training program.
Along with a cash prize, each finalist received one year free membership to SCCT as well as free registration for SCCT2024, to be held July 18 - 21, 2024 in Washington, D.C. Each award winner’s manuscript will be eligible for priority peer-reviewed publication in the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (JCCT).
