On May 3, Mount Sinai Hospital is shipping 25 ventilators and 100 sleep apnea machines with kits to convert them to ventilators, plus disposables, to hospitals all over India through a chartered plane to Mumbai. This is a grass roots effort to help India as it faces a massive increase of 350,000 new COVID cases per day. The effort is being led by Ash Tewari, M.D., chair of the Department of Urology, and Michael J. McCarry, senior vice president of perioperative services. Mount Sinai Hospital acquired these ventilators for its own COVID-19 surge last year and is now directing them to where they can be most useful. “I want people in India to know they are not fighting this alone and we are with them,” Tewari said.

Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology (DAIC) Editor Dave Fornell receiving his first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in April 2021 in Rockford, Ill, 45 miles away from the Chicago suburbs where he lives. It was the only available appointment he could find because other vaccination centers in the Chicago area were booked solid. As media he was in the last pre-qualified group for vaccine priority before vaccinations opening up to anyone who wanted it in Illinois in mid-April.

With high COVID infection rates in the German state of Saxony, they recently equipped their medical helicopter station in Bautzen with the EpiShuttle. This containment pod allows COVID-19 patients to be transported without fear of contamination in the helicopter. In 2020, DRF Luftrettung said it performed 662 coronavirus missions, with 330 patients transported by air. DRF Luftrettung has 12 EpiShuttles in use and said they play an important role in their comprehensive hygiene and adding safety for both patients and crew.

A radiologist in Hospital do Câncer de Pernambuco, located in Recife, Brazil, is examining a chest X-ray image using Lunit Insight CXR. The artificial intelligence software can auto detect and identify in heat map colors areas of the image the radiologist would look at at to confirm a diagnosis. Lunit' AI solution for chest X-ray analysis is now being used and tested in more than 10 countries for COVID-19 management, providing assistance in chest X-ray interpretation during patient triage and monitoring.

An extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system being used to support a critically ill COVID-19 patient at Banner Health in Phoenix, Arizona. For patients where ventilator support is not enough, or they begin to face multi-organ failure, ECMO can provide a way to support a failing heart and failing lungs but providing both circulatory support and blood oxygenation. GE Healthcare's new Voluson Swift ultrasound platform with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) automation features being used for a fetal ultrasound exam in mid-2020 before its formal roll out at the RSNA 2020 conference in December. The new SonoLyst AI software can auto recognize 20 standard fetal views in the second trimester protocol. The goal is to speed exam times and make the exams more accurate, even for less experienced sonographers. Speeding exam times has become important in the COVID era to reduce sonographer's amount of exposure time with each patient to reduce the chances of COVID transmission.  Watch a video on this system.

COVID-19 causes blood clots throughout the body in patients with moderate to severe disease. This is a thrombus formation in the aortic arch in a 46-year-old COVID patients in the ICU. Shannon Yaw, OTR/L, director of rehabilitation at a hard-hit nursing home in Michigan, received her first dose just before Christmas 2020. She had just contracted COVID at work when this image was taken and tested positive a few days later after she developed a dry cough. She has since recovered and returned to work. Nursing home clinicians are a part of the first priority group to receive the vaccine due to the high rates of infection and deaths in these centers. See who qualifies for the COVID vaccine.

A new, serious COVID-19 cardiovascular presentation emerged in late April and early May 2020 in the form of pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome, which includes features similar to Kawasaki disease. It was first reported in the United Kingdom and then cases began to appear in New York City and elsewhere in the United States. The CDC is calling the new presentation in kids multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) Read the article Kawasaki-like Inflammatory Disease Affects Children With COVID-19.

Hydroxychloroquine began to be used early on in the first wave of the pandemic after it was reported in China it may offer benefit and because of premilinary science suggesting it may help. However, after being used as a front-line treatment for severe COVID patients for several months, the FDA warned of numerous deaths reported from its use. A key U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) study reported in November 2020 that there is no benefit for COVID patients. Cardiac MRI for four children with clinical diagnosis of acute myocarditis in the setting of COVID-19–related Kawasaki-like symptoms of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). This severe autoimmune response that occurs a couple weeks after exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. While COVID is largely asymptomatic in pediatric patients, MIS-C is a rare and severe reaction to the virus, which has occurred in more than 1,000 U.S. children as of late October 2020, including several fatalities. The Abbott ID Now COVID-19 point of care testing system helped speed up the turnaround times for COVID results. As of Nov. 10, 2020, the FDA had approved 288 COVID tests under its emergency use authorization. Read about 20 percent false negative rates in many of the COVID PCR tests.

Vetsark, Nigeria’s leading digital solutions company for agriculture and health systems, donated critical personal protective equipment (PPE) to residents of Ajegunle Community in Lagos state in late May, 2020. This as part of its COVID-19 risk communication and prevention strategy, to help Lagos state combat COVID-19 pandemic. The items donated included facemasks, gloves and soap. The donation drive, which lasted for about eight weeks, targeted mostly underprivileged residents, local market women, security personnel, medical staff and other essential workers who are the first responders on the frontline, providing care and treatment to people affected by the virus in Ajegunle community in Africa.

Telehealth has not been widespread because there is no reimbursement for its use, while in person visits are reimbursed. Wearing facemasks for patients and staff at hospitals, clinics and medical offices has become universal in April 2020 in efforts to prevent the spread of the virus. Artificial intelligence (AI) radiology company InterVision has modified its CT Pneumonia software to help auto detect COVID-19 on computed tomography scans. The technology was put into use in China early on in the epidemic to help screen large volumes of patients and flag those with radioman symptoms for stat reads.

TRB Lightweight Structures in St Neots, U.K., is using its material science knowhow and specialist equipment to produce vital personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the a design from the architectural firm Foster + Partners in the fight against COVID-19. The company has redeployed personnel and machinery that normally create advanced composite components for electric vehicles to produce an innovative reusable face visor, and is now generating 1,000 of these per day. United Imaging has installed its first transportable CT Scanner at Maimonides Medical Center in New York City to help expand its capacity for imaging during the fight against coronavirus in the U.S. As the hospital scales its operations to meet the needs of an expected influx of coronavirus patients, doubling its capacity to 1,400 beds, United Imaging’s scanner will help expand its capacity for imaging studies to support diagnosis and treatment.

The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) COVID-19 resource page on its website in mid-April 2020. Nearly all the cardiovascular societies have created virus resource pages where clinicians can find needed medical information. Patients with cardiac comorbitities have the highest mortality rate among COVID-19 patients, so cardiology departments have become involved in the care of these patients.

Nurse James Sayson in personal protective equipment (PPE) that became the required garb to care for patients at Vitas Hospice Care in Illinois. Nursing homes and hospice care facilities closed to visitors and extreme precautions went into place in March 2020 as a precaution to protect patients from COVID-19 infections. These actions were taken after numerous nursing home deaths in Seattle Washington early on in the U.S. spread of the virus.

The old Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, just outside Chicago was closed in 2011 after construction of a new hospital. It building was used in the movie "Contagion" for hospital scenes, which was about a deadly pandemic. Ironically, the building, still empty, is now being renovated as a temporary overflow hospital because of COVID-19. A strange twist where fiction becomes fact. There was a large shortage of toilet paper during the containment efforts in Wuhan, China, in January 2020 and the news media showed massive lines of thousands of people waiting to to buy toilet paper and other necessities. As the spread of COVID-19 hit the U.S., Americans cleared the shelves of canned goods, hand sanitizer, soap and, most noticeably, toilet paper. A new, serious COVID-19 cardiovascular presentation emerged in late April and early May 2020 in the form of pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome, which includes features similar to Kawasaki disease. It was first reported in the United Kingdom and then cases began to appear in New York City and elsewhere in the United States. The CDC is calling the new presentation in kids multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) Read the article Kawasaki-like Inflammatory Disease Affects Children With COVID-19.

Vetsark, Nigeria’s leading digital solutions company for agriculture and health systems, donated critical personal protective equipment (PPE) to residents of Ajegunle Community in Lagos state in late May, 2020. This as part of its COVID-19 risk communication and prevention strategy, to help Lagos state combat COVID-19 pandemic. The items donated included facemasks, gloves and soap. The donation drive, which lasted for about eight weeks, targeted mostly underprivileged residents, local market women, security personnel, medical staff and other essential workers who are the first responders on the frontline, providing care and treatment to people affected by the virus in Ajegunle community in Africa.

COVID-19 has been found to cause clooting in some patients, causing strokes and pulmonary embiolism. The combination of COVID-cause myocarditis along with two of the most common front line drugs drugs used to treat COVID patients can cause life-threatening arrhythmias. Hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine and azithromycin all can cause QT prolongation. These drugs were used prolifically March through May to treat COVID patients, and several cardiology societies warned the first week of April in a joint statement there would likely be a rapid uptick in arrhythmia complications and possible deaths.
