February 24, 2010 – Several new radio frequency identification (RFID) smart cabinets are being introduced this week to store and track a wider variety of critical supplies used in specialty departments, including cath labs and operating rooms. WaveMark Inc. said its increased variety of RFID storage units aids in real-time tracking of medical supplies to enabling hospitals to improve cost containment, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
New RFID-enabled smart cabinet styles include a five-shelf cabinet with locking doors, a wireless mobile cabinet for easy transport from storage to procedure room, and a tabletop cabinet for tracking smaller inventories.
A locking door feature ensures the security of high cost supplies. Items in the locking cabinet can be accessed via an RFID fob or PIN that identifies the individual who accessed the product. The system can help track high-value products, such as implantable cardiac defibrillators, pacemakers and stents. A mobile, wireless cabinet allows the easy transport of items from storage areas to procedure rooms while maintaining real-time read reliability over a 12-hour battery-life. The tabletop cabinet is used to track inventory in small places or smaller inventories such as heart valves.
