Carotid Artery Stent Reduces Plaque Release

Engineered specifically for the carotid artery, Abbott's self-expanding Xact Stent uses a closed-cell, tight-mesh design allows for a high coverage area and better conformity to the carotid artery, reducing the release of plaque as well as the potential for snagging upon removal.

The flexible mesh intended to help restore the inner diameter of a carotid artery, promote a smooth inner vessel surface, and potentially reduce the release of fatty debris from a diseased vessel when it is treated, which can lead to stroke. The XACT Stent features a closed-cell design and uses a rapid exchange system.

It was launched in the United States in September 2005.
