June 20, 2011 — Boston Scientific Corporation today announced the global launch of its Mustang PTA balloon catheter, a highly deliverable 0.035-inch percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) catheter designed for a wide range of peripheral angioplasty procedures. The company plans to launch the product immediately in the United States, Europe and other international markets.
Boston Scientific developed the Mustang to meet physician needs for a low-profile, high-pressure balloon catheter in a wide range of sizes. It is the first to use Boston Scientific's NyBax balloon material, a proprietary co-extrusion of nylon and Pebax polymers engineered to provide high-pressure, non-compliant dilatation in a low-profile balloon. It offers a rated burst pressure of up to 24 atmospheres and is the only 7 x 200 mm balloon compatible with a 5 French introducer sheath. Boston Scientific offers the balloon in 203 sizes.
An estimated 8 to 10 million patients in the United States alone suffer from peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is characterized by blockages in vessels of the peripheral vasculature and is associated with high rates of morbidity. PTA balloon catheters are used in peripheral angioplasty and stenting procedures to open blocked arteries.
