ASE Technology Summit Creates Roadmap for Cardiovascular Ultrasound Research

April 13, 2011 – In the fall of 2010, leadership of the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), physician-scientists active in cardiovascular ultrasound, respected ultrasound physicists and senior engineers from several ultrasound companies came together to brainstorm possible applications for cardiovascular ultrasound.

They also considered how research might be funded and discussed the potential for collaboration with related organizations to help move the field forward. The ASE Cardiovascular Ultrasound Technology Summit also addressed research necessary to determine the broad clinical utility of hand-held ultrasound devices and the impact of future technological developments on cardiovascular imaging. The summit was part of an ongoing commitment by the leadership of the ASE to help define future applications of cardiac ultrasound and identify the areas of research that must occur in the next decade to meet those clinical needs.

The April issue of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography (JASE) features a compilation of the discussion at the summit. The article, entitled “A Suggested Roadmap for Cardiovascular Ultrasound Research for the Future,” reflects discussion of a selected range of issues relating to the assessment of global and regional left ventricular function, regional myocardial perfusion, molecular imaging, therapeutic ultrasound, and peripheral vascular imaging. The summary article is available on the Research Resources page of the ASE website.
