Generic Beta-Blocker Receives FDA Approval

April 19, 2010 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently cleared a generic version of metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets. The beta-blocker is used to treat angina, heart failure and high blood pressure.

The abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) was for metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets in the 100 and 200 mg strengths, and is the generic equivalent to AstraZeneca's Toprol XL tablets.

Toprol XL 100 and 200 mg and its generic equivalents had total U.S. sales of approximately $403 million for the 12 months ending February 2010, according to IMS Health.
