March 30, 2010 – To accelerate development, incubating and commercializing new cardiovascular technology, the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center (GCIC) plans to open a new building in May. It will house start-up companies developing new solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Strategically located near the main campuses of Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals, the incubator offers 50,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space. Clients will enjoy customizable laboratory facilities for new product research and development activities, flexible office space and conference rooms. The facility also provides clients with convenient access to world-leading clinicians and investigators along with all of GCIC’s business support services. It is hoped this combination will minimize the time it takes to develop and test prototypes of medical devices or do clinical trials of drugs.
Founded in December 2007, the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center was established by a State of Ohio Third Frontier Grant and is building the incubator facility in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic and Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation. The project has been designed, built and equipped as one of the first cardiovascular healthcare focused incubators in the United States.
The GCIC is a $250 million research and product development consortium established by the Cleveland Clinic to significantly accelerate the commercialization of cardiovascular products. Led by Steve Nissen, M.D, the GCIC is enlisting a team of national leaders in cardiovascular research, technology development, and investing.
