Duke Ultrasound Specialist to Lead OSU Heart Center

April 6, 2007 — Ohio State University Heart Center has appointed cardiac ultrasound expert Dr. Thomas Ryan as its new director. Dr. Ryan was director of the Duke University Heart Center.

His appointment by Dr. Fred Sanfilippo, senior vice president and executive dean for health sciences and CEO of Ohio State’s Medical Center, was approved today (4/6) by the university’s board of trustees. Dr. Ryan, 53, will also be named to the John G. and Jeanne Bonnet McCoy Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine and hold appointments as professor of internal medicine and physician-scientist leader for the Medical Center’s heart signature program. He will join Ohio State on
July 1.

Ohio State’s Heart Center includes cardiovascular medicine, vascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery services across the patient care, research and education mission areas, primarily involving the Ross Heart Hospital and Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute.

A longtime researcher, Dr. Ryan has emphasized the application of cutting-edge echocardiographic techniques to clinical diagnosis. He is a principal investigator on numerous clinical trials examining the use of contrast agents for evaluating ventricular function and blood flow in conjunction with stress echocardiography.

“Dr. Ryan brings powerful skills as an administrative leader of an internationally renowned program that will help Ohio State fulfill its potential as a leading Heart Center educating the brightest minds in cardiac care and advancing the translation of research discoveries into clinical applications and personalized health care,” Sanfilippo said. “His abilities as a great team leader and team player will greatly strengthen our interdisciplinary approach to research, education and patient care. We indeed are fortunate to have attracted him to Ohio State.”

Added Dr. William Abraham, director of the division of cardiovascular medicine at Ohio State, “Tom Ryan’s clinical and research expertise will add a new dimension to our imaging program. He also will be a major asset to our ongoing attraction of high-quality faculty, staff and students.”
