Siemens Creates Adaptive CT Scanner

November 19, 2007 - Siemens Medical Solutions has introduced SOMATOM Definition AS, an adaptive scanner created for strokes, cardiac conditions and cancer, designed to expand CT's role from just imaging to managing patient outcome.

The SOMATOM Definition AS, awaiting 510(k) clearance, will be displayed at RSNA 2007. The system features a large-volume coverage area with a 200-centimeter scan range, a 78-centimeter gantry bore and the ability to add a high-capacity 650-pound patient table, reportedly permitting any type of patient to be imaged rapidly. The system will be available in 40-slice, 64-slice and 128-slice configurations.

Encompassing 4D Spiral and 27-centimeter detector coverage, the Definition AS can address functional imaging (perfusion images of blood flow over time) specific to the organ being imaged, allowing the company to provide information beyond simple perfusion and into phase contrast CT. In the case of a stroke, physicians can use whole-organ perfusion imaging for as small or as large of a section as needed. The SOMATOM Definition AS also provides Adaptive Dose Shield technology by blocking extra doses before and after the spiral scan.
