Brigham and Women’s Adds 128 Slices to CT System

September 5, 2008 - Boston’s Brigham & Women’s (B&W) Hospital, a 777-bed teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, has purchased an additional four CT systems from Siemens Medical Solutions USA, including two SOMATOM Definition AS 40-slice and two SOMATOM Definition AS 128-slice systems.

Siemens upgraded B&W’s four existing units – two SOMATOM Emotion 16-slice and two Sensation 64-slice – as part of its equipment contract. The terms of the new agreement with B&W will extend the contract for an additional nine years.

The physicians will be able to further reduce dose with Siemens adaptive dose shield, and the new, adaptive 3D interventional suite.

In addition, a backlog in the hospital’s interventional procedures produced a need for an additional CT suite, and an increasing patient volume in its emergency department brought on the urgency for a faster scanner for trauma cases.

The new CT scanners will be installed in four locations at Brigham & Women’s, including the emergency and interventional departments, patient tower, and an offsite, outpatient imaging facility.

In the new agreement, B&W was able to upgrade to the newer equipment without altering its monthly payments, and obtain new functionality. Installation of these units is expected to be complete by early 2009.
